A domain that isn’t listed well is invisible to the buyers who would pay for it. Use this checklist every time you add a name to a marketplace.
- Show a price whenever you can. Buyers act on buy-now prices.
- Distribution matters: listings that reach registrar search results get seen by more end users.
- Check each marketplace’s current commission and terms before you list.
Know the major marketplaces
- Atom focuses on brandable names for startups and businesses, with buy-now, make-offer, and lease-to-own options. It’s where our Farm Team is listed.
- Afternic syndicates listings across a large network of registrars, so a buyer searching for a name at a partner registrar can see your price and buy.
- Sedo is a long-running global marketplace with auctions, brokerage, and a large international buyer base.
Each marketplace sets its own commission, payout timing, and rules. Read the current terms before listing, and avoid listing a name at different prices in different places.
The checklist
1. Price it
Use comps and the valuation framework to set a buy-now price. For names where you’re unsure, use make-offer with a minimum offer to filter lowballs.
2. Offer a payment plan
Lease-to-own and installments can turn a hesitant buyer into a customer. If the marketplace supports it, turn it on.
3. Enable fast transfer where possible
Fast-transfer networks let buyers complete the purchase immediately at their registrar. That means changing your nameservers or verifying ownership as the marketplace instructs.
4. Point the domain at a sale landing page
Anyone who types your domain should see that it’s for sale, the price, and a button to buy. Marketplace landers do this automatically once your nameservers point to them.
5. Write a useful description
Describe who the name is for and what it could become. Specific use cases help buyers imagine owning it. Every name on our Farm Team has a pitch and build ideas for exactly this reason.
6. Categorize and tag
Put the name in the right industry categories and add relevant tags so marketplace search surfaces it.
7. Keep your pricing consistent
If a name is on several marketplaces, keep the price the same everywhere. Mismatched prices confuse buyers and can cause double sales.
8. Confirm you can deliver
Make sure the name isn’t locked by a recent transfer, the registration isn’t about to expire, and your registrar account is in good standing.
9. Promote beyond the marketplace
List your names on your own site, like our Farm Team page, with a dedicated page for each domain that links to its marketplace listing. It gives you search visibility and a place to send outbound contacts.
10. Review every quarter
Adjust prices based on new comps and the interest you’ve received. A name with lots of views but no offers may be priced too high. A name with no views may need better distribution.
After the sale
Follow the marketplace’s transfer instructions promptly. Fast, clean transfers protect your reputation and your account standing.
