- Aftermarket
- The resale market for domains that are already registered.
- BIN
- Buy It Now: a fixed-price listing a buyer can purchase instantly.
- Backorder
- A request to try to register a domain the moment it drops.
- Brandable
- An invented or catchy name suited to a startup brand, like Zoomra or Botstr.
- ccTLD
- A country-code extension such as .co, .io, .ai, or .me.
- Comps
- Comparable past sales used to justify a price.
- Cybersquatting
- Registering a name in bad faith to profit from someone else's trademark.
- Drop catching
- Using a service to register a domain the moment it expires and drops.
- EMD
- Exact match domain: a name that matches a search phrase, like CheaperMedsOnline.com.
- End user
- A business buying a name to use it, rather than an investor.
- EPP code
- The authorization code needed to transfer a domain between registrars.
- Escrow
- A neutral third party that holds payment until the transfer is complete.
- Fast transfer
- A marketplace network that delivers a purchased name instantly through partner registrars.
- gTLD
- A generic top-level domain such as .com, .net, or .org.
- Grace period
- Time after expiry when the owner can still renew at the normal price.
- Hand reg
- A domain you registered new at the standard price.
- Holding cost
- The renewal fees you pay while waiting for a sale.
- Landing page
- The page shown on a domain advertising that it is for sale.
- Lease-to-own
- The buyer pays in installments and receives the domain at the end.
- Liquidity
- How quickly a name could sell to another investor at wholesale.
- LLL / LLLL
- Shorthand for three- or four-letter domains.
- Make offer
- A listing that invites offers instead of showing a fixed price.
- Minimum offer
- The lowest offer a seller will consider.
- NAR
- Name Above Replacement: the Moneyball Names scouting score from 0 to 100.
- New gTLD
- Newer extensions such as .xyz, .app, or .shop.
- Outbound
- Contacting potential end users directly to pitch a name.
- Parking
- Placing ads on an unused domain to earn from its traffic.
- Pending delete
- The final days before an expired domain drops and becomes available.
- Portfolio
- A domain investor's collection of names.
- Push
- Moving a domain between accounts at the same registrar.
- Redemption period
- A window after expiry when the owner can recover a name for a fee.
- Registrar
- The company you register a domain through.
- Registry
- The organization that runs an extension, such as Verisign for .com.
- RDNH
- Reverse domain name hijacking: abusing UDRP to take a name the complainant has no right to.
- STR
- Sell-through rate: the share of a portfolio that sells each year.
- Type-in traffic
- Visitors who type a domain straight into the browser.
- UDRP
- ICANN's dispute process for trademark owners to claim a domain.
- Upgrade
- When a business buys the .com or a shorter version of the name it already uses.
- Wholesale
- Selling to other investors at investor-level prices.
